Paediatric Physiotherapy
Specialist physiotherapy for children and families across Perth.
At Little Bodies Therapy, our paediatric physiotherapists help children build strength, confidence, and independence through movement and play. Our sessions are hands-on, goal-based, and always focused on the things that matter most to your child and family.
We provide physiotherapy for children from infancy through to adolescence (0–16 years), with a special focus on early intervention to build strong foundations for movement and participation. Our clinic supports families throughout the Perth metro area (with many travelling from regional WA for therapy and intensive blocks) and we’re always happy to collaborate with your local therapy team to ensure continuity of care.
How physiotherapy helps
Building Movement Skills
-
Physiotherapy helps children build the strength and stability they need to move safely and confidently. By improving balance, coordination, and postural control, we support everyday movement like sitting, standing, walking, and playing with greater ease.
-
We support gross motor development across all ages - from early milestones like rolling, sitting, and crawling, through to walking, running, jumping, and stairs - helping children build skills that translate into real-world participation.
-
We support children to move more efficiently by improving alignment and how their muscles work together. This helps reduce fatigue, improve control, and make movement feel easier and more comfortable in daily life.
-
Physiotherapists provide practical handling and positioning strategies to support comfort, safety, and participation at home, school, and in the community, while helping caregivers assist with confidence.
-
When needed, we assess and recommend mobility equipment such as walkers, standing frames, or tricycles to support independence, participation, and confidence in everyday environments.
Participation and Everyday Life
-
We support children with complex physical disabilities to maintain flexibility, comfort, and mobility, focusing on maximising participation and preventing secondary complications.
-
We create practical exercise and equipment programs that can be used beyond the clinic (at home, school, and in the community) to build functional skills and maintain mobility over time.
-
We work closely with families, educators, and other therapists to support shared goals such as play, self-care, transfers, school participation, and community involvement.
-
We provide families with education, strategies, and home-based guidance so progress continues between sessions and children can build independence through everyday routines.
Core Methods
and Approaches
Our physiotherapists use a range of evidence-informed techniques to support each child’s unique goals. These may include:
-
Centred on meaningful daily activities like play, self-care, school tasks, and community participation.
-
Using games, toys, obstacle courses, and creative equipment to make therapy motivating and enjoyable.
-
Used when appropriate to promote postural control, motor planning, and gross motor function.
-
Including supported practice of standing, stepping, walking, jumping, and hopping. A Universal Exercise Unit is used, which is a three-sided wire device with a belt and bungee cords, to provide adjustable body-weight support depending on task and goal.
-
Such as walkers, gait trainers, standing frames, tricycles, and other mobility aids to support independence and participation.
-
Using wobble boards, therapy balls, stepping tasks, and playful challenges to enhance stability.
-
Including seating, standing, and handling techniques to promote comfort and reduce risk of secondary complications.
-
Helping children sequence complex movement patterns needed for everyday tasks.
-
Age-appropriate activities to improve stamina and overall physical health.
What to Expect
in Sessions
Initial Assessment
Your child’s physiotherapy journey begins with an assessment completed over two appointments:
A 45-minute phone call to learn about your child’s history, strengths, challenges, and goals.
A 45-minute face-to-face assessment at the clinic to see how your child moves, plays, and participates in real time.
From there, your physiotherapist will work with you to create a plan for your ongoing sessions.
Ongoing sessions
Each therapy session is 45 minutes long and blends play with purposeful movement activities that build strength, balance, coordination, and independence. Families are actively involved, with therapists coaching you in strategies you can use at home, school, or in the community so progress continues between sessions.
